Practical commuting for college or grad. school?

Esteban Lyson: It depends where in LA. LA is a big area. It's a different story when commuting to the coastal areas vs that of Ontario, for example. It can take 2-3 hours getting from Ontario to LAX, for example, on a bad day. I-15 also gets shut down sometimes during bad weather (it happens) and with bad accidents. You would have to schedule a considerable buffer time on arrival to be on the safe side.In general, be aware that grad programs often don't include just classroom time. There's research, group issues, non-class seminars, possibly lecturing, and all other activities associated with a decent grad program. You may find it frustrating or even impossible to schedule everything into just one or two days a week. Sounds like an idea of hell to me -- grad school is hard enough on its own....Show more

Emilie Santmyer: OK I live in Vegas and wouldn't ever drive to LA. Mapquest may say it takes 4 hours but with all of the construction along the I-15 corridor,! heavy traffic, and the fact that I-15 between LA and Vegas is a death trap, I would expect that your commute would be a lot longer. Also factor in gas prices and wear and tear on your car and you'll be spending a pretty penny just to get to school. Even with flying back and forth I would still think it would be difficult because of what graduate school is like. Most grad school programs are not designed where you can just pick classes based on days of the week. Typically the number of classes are limited and you'll just have to be there when they tell you to be there. Plus, depending on your degree major, you'll have extra meetings (the once a week meeting with your advisor, all of your committee meetings, proposal defense, degree defense, comps), and other tasks that need to be done in person. Trust me, I do a lot of running around campus trying to get forms signed!Sorry if I sound pessimistic but I live 30 minutes from campus and can't imagine living any further away tha! n that! It would be impossible for me unless I could figure ou! t how to function without ever sleeping, and even then I still think it would be impossible. Why don't you consider going to grad school in Vegas? UNLV has some good grad programs.Personal experience with one MS degree and currently finishing up my PhD!...Show more

Amina Motzer: Seeing as the locations you are describing don't see much "bad" weather (snow, rain, etc) it probably wouldn't be that bad of a commute. But remember that college isn't always about going to class there are meetings, study groups, papers, etc to work on, so really think about how often you'll need to be on campus. On a simple mapquest search, it was about 4 hours from the center of Las Vegas to LA. If you're willing to spend 8 hours in a car once or twice a week, on top of whatever else you're doing, then I say, go for it. But remember you may have a huge plan to get your classes on two certain days but graduate programs aren't like undergrad in the sense that they aren't as common - there! aren't as many classes or sections offered every semester and you may end up making your degree take longer to complete. Class A may meet Mondays and Wednesdays while Class B meets Tuesdays and Thursdays. But if you can plan ahead and get it all straightened out and don't mind putting 600+ miles on your car every week, then it might be a good option. Another thing to think about is actual travel time - you may get stuck in rush hour! Good luck. There are a lot of schools that offer online programs now that are legitimate and are widely accepted from REAL universities. Research this - Central Michigan University does....Show more
