Mitchell Pickens: you first turn wood into wooden planks. Then you put one wooden block plank in your crafting square. You should get a crafting station, if you place it, then right click on it, it should give you a 3x3 square.

Raleigh Lufkin: First, you need to punch at least one tree to get one log. Use that log in your crafting box to make 4 planks; use those 4 planks in your crafting box, one in each square, to create a workbench. Put this workbench on your toolbar and use it; it will be placed on the ground. Right-click it and you will have your 3x3 crafting square.
